Could Probiotics Help Control Blood Cholesterol Levels?
Cholesterol Level and Probiotics
Extra weight increases the risk to have high cholesterol. Although cholesterol is an important basic block for body tissues, the risk of heart attack is three times higher in subjects with hypercholesterolemia, compared to those who have normal blood lipid profiles. In addition, high levels of cholesterol in the blood circulation are strongly associated with the progression of atherosclerosis.
Benefits of Cholesterol Level and Probiotics
Probiotics have researched and proven benefits for Hypercholesterolemia treatment. Probiotic bacteria are defined as live microorganisms which when administered in adequate amounts confer a health benefit on the host. Some of them are efficient in lowering total cholesterol in humans.
The possible mechanisms for cholesterol removal by probiotics include inhibition of intestinal cholesterol absorption and suppression of bile acid reabsorption.
Promising Research Results for Hypercholesterolemia Treatment
In a recent study, the administration of a yogurt containing Lactobacillus reuteri to a group of 53 hypercholesterolaemic subjects over 6 weeks reduced their cholesterol and LDL (bad cholesterol) levels as compared with 54 hypercholesterolaemic subjects that received only yogurt .
In an additional study, volunteers received placebo or a probiotic preparation named VSL#3, containing three strains of bifidobacteria (Bifidobacterium longum, Bifidobacterium infantis, and Bifidobacterium breve), four strains of lactobacilli (Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus paracasei, Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus, and Lactobacillus plantarum) and one strain of Streptococcus salivarius subsp. thermophiles. Only the group who consumed probiotics resulted in increased HDL (good cholesterol) and decreased triglycerides and LDL (bad cholesterol) levels after 6 weeks of treatment .
Conclusion: High Cholesterol Probiotic Treatment
